This “Creative Connections” Series on the blog is where I hunt down creative artisans & designers to showcase their work and uncover the story behind their creative world. Are you a creative type doing interesting work in homewares or design? Send me a quick message over on my instagram account, to be showcased next.
On today’s creative connection we have the lovely Joanne Cunnington who is the creator behind Sabai The Collection. Sabai : “Pronounced [sah-bigh]. A beautifully harmonious word translating to comfort and relaxation, the inspiration behind the entire collection itself.” Sabai The collection, is a selection of beautiful marble effect pieces from clocks to soy candles. Check out Joanne’s gorgeous instagram account here
1. When did you start Sabai The Collection?
Sabai The Collection was established earlier this year as a way to extract my thoughts, ideas and feelings. I can honestly say that this has been many years in the making. I kept saying to myself, one day I’d like to do this, or one day I’d like to do that and never thought I was capable of creating something that people would be interested in. So if I ever had to give advice to someone who is thinking of doing something, I would say…you can do it, start now!
2. Have you always been creatively motivated, always wanted to be an artist/designer once finishing school?
I’ve always admired art in each and every form, I studied art throughout high school but once I finished school I really had no idea what I wanted to be. l think the creative side of me was partially out of a need to be different, to solve problems differently and to view the world differently and art itself is a great canvas for that.
3. What’s your favourite habit to start a new project? or if you’re feeling stuck creatively, what do you do that helps?
I always keep a sketch pad handy for those moments and it is usually very late at night when an idea comes to me. If I am feeling stuck for ideas, it is usually because there are other things that weigh heavy on mind. So, I try to be in a relaxed state, light one of my candles, drink some tea and take time out.
4. Do you have a favourite hashtag (#) or Instagram account and inspires you at the moment?
One of my all time favourite Instagram accounts is @garypeppergirl, the photography and calibre of her work is absolutely breathtaking!
5. What book are you reading at the moment?
I am actually trying to finish a history book, it’s just about various events that shaped history. If I don’t know much about a subject I will try to read up on it. Other than that, it is a lot of home and interior design or fashion magazines!
Thanks Joanne for stopping by & having a chat. I can’t believe you only just started your online store this year. A big congrats. Q3: Trying to get into that relaxed state – is something I struggle with. Thanks for some tips, such a simple idea -lighting a candle & drinking tea. Q4 Wow thanks for the inspirational insta account of @garypeppergirl – what 1.2 million followers? but I can see why her photo’s are gorgeous!
Wishing you all the best in 2015, Joanne. Thanks again
